Priority Services Register for older and disabled people

If you sign up to your supplier's Priority Services Register (PSR), you can get extra help and support with your energy supply.

The benefit of being on the register varies between energy suppliers but users may be offered free gas safety checks, free meter readings, the option to nominate somebody else to be sent a copy of the bill (a carer for example) and advanced notice if any energy supply has been interrupted.

You will need to contact both your gas and electricity suppliers to be added to the register.

Energy price calculator

Money Saving Expert has produced an energy price cap calculator which may help to calculate your energy costs, based on your usage. If you are currently on a pre-capped standard tariff you can enter your energy figures into the calculator for an estimate of what you will pay. This calculator won't be able to provide estimates for those on a fixed tariff deal, only for standard tariffs.

Warm Home Discount Scheme

The government’s Warm Home Discount is a one-off payment to reduce eligible customers' bills over the winter months. Your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill, the money is not paid to you.

You do not need to apply for the scheme, payments are automatic, but you will only be eligible if your energy supplier is part of the scheme.

Winter Fuel Payment

If you were born before 23 September 1958 you could get a Winter Fuel Payment from the government to help you pay your heating bills. The amount will vary depending on eligibility, you could get either £200 or £300.

You may be eligible if you or your partner get certain benefits. If you are eligible, you will normally get the Winter Fuel Payment automatically.

Cold Weather Payment

People on certain benefits may be eligible for a Cold Weather Payment from the government if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees Celsius or below over 7 consecutive days. If you are eligible, you will get these payments automatically, you do not need to apply.

Grant to help pay off energy debts

If you are in debt to your energy supplier, you might be able to get a grant to help pay it off.

Ofgem offers advice on what to do if you cannot afford to pay your energy bill, including links for schemes, grants and benefits that you may be able to access for help.

Even if your energy provider is not listed as part of the scheme, you might be able to get a grant from the British Gas Energy Trust. This grant is available to anyone - you do not have to be a British Gas customer.
