This summer, local people are being invited to identify improvements they would like to see to Ely’s Riverside

A list of five priority areas have been created after East Cambridgeshire District Council has met with bodies such as the Environment Agency, City of Ely Council and City of Ely Riverside Perspective Group.

The public are now being invited to identify their priorities for improvement via a month long consultation. These are:

* The Public Slipway. Would it be a good use of public money to improve the public slipway for launching boats?

* Cycling. Should cycling be allowed on the riverside pathways?

* Wildfowl. Would it be helpful to provide more information to people about the correct feeding of water fowl and provide food dispensers for people to buy the correct food if they want to feed the birds?

* Street lighting. Should the lighting on riverside be improved by installing solar studs into the path to improve safety where the path narrows next to the river?

* Public Fishing Area. Should the District Council continue to lease an area of riverside from Ely High Bridge to Lode Bridge from the Environment Agency for public fishing at an additional cost of £5,500?

The consultation is open until Monday 22 July.

Councillor Richard Hobbs, Chairman of the Community and Environment Committee, said: "Ely’s Riverside is a wonderful place. It is place to unwind, to play, to listen to music, to walk and to treasure. Our aim is to keep it a special place for everyone who enjoys the area. This is why we are asking the public which of the five identified areas they would like to prioritise in the years ahead.

"Unfortunately budgets and grant availability mean that while we would like to do everything – we simply can’t afford too and we need to priorities carefully. This is why this consultation is so important it gives the people who use the Riverside the chance to have their say. Please take this opportunity for we promise to listen and act on the information which you give us."
